High Pressure and Low Pressure Die Casting: Ultimate Guide 2023

How is the production of high pressure die casting?

For the production of high pressure die casting, permanent metal molds composed of two parts and retractable and removable cores are used to recreate the surface inside the casting. The prepared molds are poured with a metal liquid and kept under high pressure until their temperature drops and solidifies.

During die casting process, the die casting machine presses the two halves of the mold together. The force with which the device is able to do this determines how large and how complex in terms of construction the product can be obtained. After the metal solidifies, the mold halves are opened; the finished casting is removed and sent for further processing (sand casting, shot-blasting, and vibrating cleaning).

The Common Die Casting Methods Include

  • Gravity Die Casting
  • Metal Casting
  • Investment Casting

Hot Chamber and Cold Chamber Die Casting

Depending on whether die castings are made on hot chamber or cold chamber die casting machines, the material for their production is automatically fed or manually/mechanically delivered by a bucket. In machines with a hot press chamber, a steel piston with a cylinder system and a gooseneck is responsible for creating the pressure needed to force the molten metal from the tank to the mold.

The production of the above-mentioned high pressure casting products is carried out by the aluminum high pressure die castings. Most orders for their execution are carried out for companies from the automotive industry. The pressure casting method is used to elements such as pumps, turbines, engine blocks, or suspension parts.

Factors affecting the quality of the low pressure die casting

The quality of the low pressure die casting depends primarily on the efficiency of the machines used by the aluminum foundry and how the mold was prepared. In both cases, lubrication is key. In order to be able to press liquid material into the mold without any problems, the pressure chamber and the pressing piston must work reliably.

However, before use, the low pressure die mold must be thoroughly coated with a lubricant, thanks to which the material will fill it better and it will be easier to remove the casting from it.

In addition, protecting the mold with a lubricant (e.g. grease with motor oil or synthetic waxes) will help reduce the problem of material build-up on the mold surface. The grease is best distributed by spraying to obtain an even, thin protective layer.

Distinctive features of high pressure die casting

High pressure die casting has smooth, well-refined surfaces that in many cases do not require finishing. The products show high dimensional accuracy (dimensions are identical to those included in the specification), so there are no difficulties with mounting the parts in the machine or assembling the elements together (the components are perfectly matched, and nothing needs to be corrected).

In addition, high pressure die casting is distinguished by the perfect mapping of shapes, they also have precisely refined details, which is reflected in their overall appearance. They exhibit excellent chemical, mechanical and physical properties.

Application of high pressure die casting

Elements of the construction of household appliances, elements of fittings, decorative elements of bathroom systems, car parts, fasteners from the lighting industry, food industry

Casting is a popular way to form new objects from molten metal liquid raw materials. One of the casting methods used is pressure casting. As the name suggests, this is an activity that takes place under very high pressure.

This advanced technique requires the use of specialized equipment, without which it would not be possible to achieve such high speeds (up to one hundred meters per second) and such high pressure, which is not without significance when it comes to the final product that can be obtained as a result of pressure casting .

What characterizes the finished casting resulting from pressure casting?

Surface quality:

You should pay attention to this aspect because it is thanks to this type of low pressure die casting that you can get a perfect surface layer. This is of great importance when it comes to, for example, things used in interior decoration (lighting elements, handles, parts of bathroom fittings) or decorative car details.

Exact dimensions and workmanship:

High pressure die casting allows you to obtain exactly the dimensions of the product that have been ordered by the customer. This is especially important if the item is to be part of a larger machine that will later need to be put together.

The perfect representation of the shape of the casting:

As a result of forcing metal liquid into the casting mold under high pressure, its faithfully reproduced shape is obtained. Thanks to this, things do not require such intensive processing as is the case with other types of castings.

Good chemical, mechanical and physical properties of the obtained items. For this reason, they find a very wide application.

Processing methods of high pressure die casting

In our company, we can offer you, apart from this standard of low pressure die casting and high pressure die casting, also pressure-castings with embedded steel elements. You can choose raw or processed products.

On our part, we can offer sandblasting, shot-blasting, or even cleaning in a vibrating device. Such treatments will allow for obtaining an even better surface for high pressure die casting.

The material used for die casting

At Castingod, we make low pressure casting from various materials, most often aluminum, zinc, and brass alloys. However, we are also able to start the production of alloys of these metals not only under the standards that we use daily, but also following many others, such as DIN, UNI, or even ASTM. Why is it worth choosing our castings?

Certainly, because low pressure casting has the excellent quality, is made with the utmost care, and at the same time is durable.

Quality above all!

To obtain the highest product quality, low pressure die casting must be carried out by specialists. In our company, we are aware of how important it is. That is why we employ experienced professionals for whom quality is as important as it is for us.
